Travel and your job prospects

It’s the age-old decision.  College or a job is ending, and you’re not sure what you’d like to do with your life.  How do you decide, and where do you go from here? Well, if you are listening to employers, the answer might be to travel.

Employers love travelers.

In a survey of one thousand people from U.K., France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Brazil and South Korea, researchers found that more than 80 percent of employers viewed applicants as better prospects if they’ve traveled to other countries.   The study found that traveling not only helped people with self-confidence (64 percent felt more employable), but also caused employers to view them as more employable. In fact, a staggering 82 percent of employers said they felt that people who traveled and experienced new places would make better employees.  The main reasons travel was seen as a plus were its contribution to better people skills, the ability to adapt to new situations, and enhanced communication skills.

As the authors of the study point out, travel has many lasting advantages beyond pleasure and memories. “Traveling not only allows people the space and time to think about what they want to do with their lives and ignite their passions, but also provides you with invaluable skills including increased confidence that will help you to stand out from the crowd.”

So, the next time you’re between things, you just may want to push the button on that exotic trip.  What you gain in confidence and personal skills may pay off big time when you return home.
